Zachariah Johnsen is an illustrator, fine artist, graphic designer and art director currently living in Portland, Oregon. His concentration is pen & ink, watercolor, and mixed media works on paper.  Zach focuses on the more ignored side of life – on the sides of people and places that visitors rarely see.  But most of the people have obvious human/animal hybrids that can’t be hidden.  He has lent his  unique style to create commissioned work for patrons around the globe, created original works for print and publications, action sports, furniture, and apparel designs. Zach co-founded and art directed the NY/CA based clothing and apparel company Tank Theory. Sketchbook is Zach’s 216 page 15 years worth of cataloged sketch ramblings in one book.  In addition to the book, Zach completed a collaborative mural for Forest For The Trees this pass summer.

MINIVIEW

As a creative person how do you balance the business and artistic aspects of your daily life?

Business and art are intimately connected in my case because my art is my business.  I sell art prints of my work, I sell paintings and do commissions.  I run a brand that features my art and design work. Most of the art I produce gets wrapped into my business one way or another.

What is your favorite product or series of products in your collection?

My favorite product (and this is probably because I just received them) is the book I just put out called Sketchbook.  It is an art book in the form of a filled black book and chronicles the last decade of my drawing and sketch output.

Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?

Gatherer I’d say.. I’m good at finding and scavenging things..

What makes a great work environment for you?

A great work environment has windows and natural light!  Plants are nice.. A sturdy work table and a solid drawing table are a must.  A place I can call my own where I can be as messy (or neat) as I so choose and I can pee in a sink if I don’t want to leave.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Sundays I like to avoid crowds and human traffic in general… wherever that may be…
